About Great Aletsch Glacier

The gargantuan Great Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier of the European Alps. It is located in the Bernese Alps, in the Swiss canton of Valais. With a length of about 22 km, a surface area of over 80 km2 and a maximum thickness of around 800 m, this truly is the Queen of the Alps. Its meltwater gathers in the Massa and eventually flows, via the Rhône, into the Mediterranean Sea.

The high accessibility make this glacier a major tourist attraction; Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are two of the main viewpoints at the lower end of the glacier, whereas the Jungfraujoch railway station gives you fantastic views from 3'450 m high.

About the design

This print features a close up of the ablation area of the glacier. High melt rates are causing dramatic thinning and will eventually lead to the complete disappearance of ice at these lower altitudes.

The contour lines are calculated based on the latest elevation model by Swisstopo and are a representation of the glacier surface at one point in time.

Can you trace the extended contour line through the image? You'll surely find it on a different position in the next version!

We've centered the poster around a fixed coordinate (visible on the bottom of the poster / back of the postcard), in order to enable future comparison; as soon as there are updated elevation models, we'll update our designs!

Not a static fingerprint, but an evolving glacierprint. This is snapshot, frozen in time. For you and for your ice.

About the paper

All posters are printed on 250 GSM matte paper, which is made of 100% waste paper. It's FSC and Blue Angel certified and For Your Ice requests the paper producer to offset the unavoidable CO2 emissions.

For our postcards we use slightly heavier, matte, 300 GSM paper, which is wood-free and FSC certified.
