About Great Aletsch Glacier
The gargantuan Great Aletsch Glacier is the longest glacier of the European Alps. It is located in the Bernese Alps, in the Swiss canton of Valais. With a length of about 22 km, a surface area of over 80 km2 and a maximum thickness of around 800 m, this truly is the Queen of the Alps. Its meltwater gathers in the Massa and eventually flows, via the Rhône, into the Mediterranean Sea.
The high accessibility make this glacier a major tourist attraction; Bettmerhorn and Eggishorn are two of the main viewpoints at the lower end of the glacier, whereas the Jungfraujoch railway station gives you fantastic views from 3'450 m high.
