The Plaine Morte Glacier has an exceptionally flat surface area of around 7 km2 and is situated on the border between the Swiss cantons of Valais and Bern. It sits on a distinct karst system, which allows for part of the meltwater to drain underground through the numerous holes and caves under the ice. As a result, the meltwater of the Plaine Morte gathers in both the Simme and the Rhône, meaning it ends up in both the North Sea and the Mediterannean!
It is easily reachable from Crans-Montana and even allows for summer skiing!
